Absent investments to digitize the distribution grid in order to access granular consumption and power quality data, utilities are at risk of being unprepared. Additionally, the accelerating adoption of electric vehicles is stressing existing grid infrastructure by changing the system plans for utilities and putting transformers at risk of failure. The consequences of global climate change continue to challenge the resiliency of distribution grids. O'Connor's vibrant, kinetic art brings ancient tales to undeniable life in a perfect fusion of super-hero aesthetics and ancient Greek mythology. They're action-packed, fast-paced, high-drama adventures with monsters, romance, and not a few huge explosions. George O'Connor is a Greek mythology buff and a classic superhero comics fan, and he's out to remind us how much our pantheon of superheroes (Superman, Batman, the X-Men, etc) owes to mankind's ORIGINAL superheroes: the Greek pantheon. But these stories aren't sedate, scholarly works. In Olympians, O'Connor draws from primary documents to reconstruct and retell classic Greek myths. One about a Bear.”īook Synopsis: Before Winnie-the-Pooh, there was a real bear named Winnie. “It’s awfully late.” It was long past dark, and a time to be asleep. Opening: “Could you tell me a story?” asked Cole. Themes: Bear, True Story, Canadian Soldier, Mascot, London Zoo, Christopher Robbins In this first book, Rebus, a detective sergeant, is already something of a black sheep among his colleagues for his loner ways. So, after an opportunity to read and review A Heart Full of Headstones (2022), the most recent book in the series, I enjoyed it so much that I knew I had to go back to the genesis of John Rebus and read the entire series. I’m late to the party with Rankin and his Rebus series, surprising since I read as much international crime as I do the domestic variety. He shows off his encyclopedic knowledge of Edinburgh and its surrounds, the setting of most of the Rebus novels, and he expertly details the painstaking investigation procedures used by Edinburgh detectives trying to catch a killer with the technology of the times. Yet the quality of the writing in this nearly thirty-six-year-old novel, written while Rankin was a postgraduate student at the University of Edinburgh, illustrates why Rankin is one of the top crime writers in the business today. The plot smolders but never quite catches fire. It’s a labyrinthine tale of Edinburgh cops tracking a vicious serial killer who preys on young girls. Knots and Crosses is the brooding 1987 debut police thriller by Scottish crime writer Ian Rankin, introducing his Detective Inspector John Rebus character, a hard drinking Scottish detective with a troubled past, and launching the series that made Rankin famous. She had enough presence of mind to realize how incredibly strong his pull was, and how difficult it would be to fight it off.ĭimly she forced herself to blink, trying to break the connection. Victoria was sluggish, but she still held the stake, and the candle in her other hand. His breath began to match hers, then fought to control their merging breathing. The blood in her veins surged, swelling the vessels so that hot pressure pounded through her body. As Beauregard’s control crept over her, Victoria felt her limbs begin to soften and her head to swim. Guardian vampires, the ones with ruby eyes who also made up Lilith’s personal guard, had especially strong enthralling powers. His lower fangs were much shorter, but just as lethal, and hidden by his lower lip.ĭuring their banter she’d foolishly allowed herself to relax enough that her gaze drifted too directly to his, too tightly to his ruby irises. So sharp that the feel of them sinking into one’s flesh would hardly be noticeable, more pleasure than pain. They were no longer than a man’s first knuckle, but sharp as a razor. “As you wish.” Beauregard grinned, and now his fangs flashed. “I expect it will be only a matter of time until you do,” Victoria replied. Once at the Orders, she is healed and sent to be an apprentice to a man, named Max, who does not wish to be disturbed by the worlds any longer. Unfortunately, it is at the cost of leaving her best friend behind as she flees on horseback across the country while bleeding, to reach the safety of the Orders. The night she attempts to buy her freedom, Tisaanah snaps and barely escapes with her life. Tisaanah’s magic manifests in a beautiful display of butterflies as she dances artfully for her master and his partons, while desperately trying to earn 1000 gold marks for her freedom. The mines, which is where the rest of her people were sentenced, and it is revealed very early that this is a death sentence. Tisaanah, a beautiful yet tormented young girl was captured by slavers at a very young age, as the backstory is revealed we come to find out that while she was captured and sold as a slave Tissanah’s mother saved her from a far worse death. Immediately we are drawn in by a beautiful display of worldbuilding, that distinctly reminds me of both Robin Hobb and Jacqueline Carey. Daughter of No Worlds by Carissa Broadbent captivated my interest right away. And she won’t talk to the police because she has a sense of duty(?) towards her “Friend” who not only drove over the victim, but was so desperate to avoid being caught she forced the first woman into aiding her in hiding the body.īut most stunning is the two kidnappings themselves. A wife will talk about anything with her husband except her role in an accidental death. A couple kidnap a girl because they want to feel a sense of notoriety that surrounds a similar kidnapping. The motives of the villains, and there are several, are mind numbingly stupid. I know, if she didn’t behave in this totally inconsistent manner there would be no story, but still. But when THE crises occurs, the accidental killing of a person, the central character acts against everything we have learned about her. The actions of the main characters, almost entirely women, flow in one direction. Not knowing what was in store for me, I read this book. My best guess is it allows the reader to think, since this happened to the women in the story, it can’t happen to me.Ī type of whistling past the graveyard effect. What I don’t understand why they are so popular among women. I know there is a very large audience for novels where terrible things happen to women. Local Woman Missing (2021) by Mary Kubica.
